A journey through socialist 1980s Cuba created by Cuban comics artist and filmmaker Juan Padrón
It´s the year 1984 and Mauricio Vincent, a 20 year-old journalist at El País, has had enough of Madrid so he packs up to visit La Habana. He is so fascinated by his new surroundings that he decides to stay, savouring a city where tourism is yet scarce and the spirit of the revolution can be felt in the air. Fierce control and lack of efficiency from the US forces are gradually leaving a mark – ration books, side shops, parallel imports, currency trafficking, and children bearing Russian names. Cuban illustrator and filmmaker Juan Padrón, director of Vampires in Havana, creates a vivid portrait of the island prior to the fall of the Soviet Union, and it’s through the joyful accounts of young Mauricio that we get to experience this firsthand.
