Photographer Carlos Spottorno and reporter Guillermo Abril, winners of the 2015 World Press Photo prize, present this graphic essay about the situation at the EU external borders
Carlos Spottorno and Guillermo Abril have travelled across the border that runs from Africa to the Arctic. Their aim is to identify the causes and effects of a lack of identity in Europe. It is after three years of work, 25,000 photographs, a World Press Photo award and 15 pads filled with notes that La Grieta is born. The result is a mix between a photographic book and a graphic novel focusing on a series of events: the encounter with the sub-Saharan community of the Gurugu region, a dinghy rescue mission off the Libyan coast, a refugee exodus from the Balkans, and Afghan and Cameroonian refugees travelling from Russia in deepest winter.
